France Day 25: La Ferrassie and Food

This past weekend at the atlatl competition we met a nice man digging at La Ferrassie. (For brief info on the massive importance of Ferrassie, see http://www.donsmaps.com/ferrassie.html). He invited us to stop by when we got a chance, and we decided today would be a splendid day to do so.
We got there before lunch and got a brief 'tour' around the site. There were a number of people from around the world digging there, and I was able to snap some pictures while one of the archaeologists and Alex talked.

We were then invited to return for lunch, at which point some pretty well-known names in the field would be joining us. Alex and I figured the only proper thing to do would be to return with chevre, tapinade, wild cherries, and a baguette (all were warmly received by the crew). It just happened to be market day in Le Bugue. Since things are now getting much more touristy, the size of the market has increased to 10 times the size it was two weeks ago. We had a blast running around the market, sampling tasty delicacies, and buying food to take back to the crew.

This field lunch, though not as fancy as Arcy-Sur-Cure, was very tasty. 5 kinds of cheeses, bread, tuna salad, salami, marinated olives, and other tasty bits. We were able to talk to several of the archaeologists, and I definitely got to give one of them crap about his 'Neanderthal Cookbook' that he published. All in all a good afternoon.
From there, we headed out to look for more rocks. Senonian to be precise. Given the mass amounts of this stuff kicking around, we didn't have any trouble locating multiple sources. That gave us time to check out La Moustier (another famous archaeologial site) while out and about.

So, with the evening to ourselves we're going to eat at a restaurant that has come highly recommended by one of the archaeologists. It just so happens it is literally 40 feet from where we're staying.

If the food is anywhere as good as it is rumored to be, then we're in for a real treat. Regardless, it will be a beautiful evening with a wonderful view! Bon Appetite!
